Club introduction:

Insight: independent student media in English

Insight magazine club was founded in the fall of 2014 by Li yiwei, in the purpose of providing students with a platform to express their own concerns. In order to create a restraint-free environment for students both in-campus and off-campus to have the opportunity to let the outside hear our voice, we’ve gathered more than forty fellow high school students of our age and have established an independent student media with both online and offline magazines.

Our visions expressed in the magazines are about the trend in the current society, and our topic of writing ranges from sports to music, news to culture, and food to our daily lives. Writing about the issues in our own perspectives, we have issued two volumes of magazine, each volume with over five hundred copies being printed. Our goal is to reach to more and more people and influence our surroundings with our own voice.

We have three departments in the club including editorial department, design and layout department and publicity department. Editorial department is the backbone of the entire system, it provides the club with refreshment and vigor by updating new articles. Design and layout department is in charge of the collective image arrangement and design work. The effort of the members of the Design department assures our high quality magazine so that we can always present our readers with our painstakingly designed articles. The publicity department is also decisive in the operation of our entire system. Members of the system are responsible for contacting for partnership with other clubs in other schools and expand our own influence.

Founder’s introduction

Harry Li, founder and chief editor of the Insight magazine club, had the idea of founding such a student independent media initially in summer of 2014 and gave his first presentation of initiating the club to all of the students in the fall of 2014. He then engaged passionately in the club activities afterward, and devoted his full attention to collecting students’ own opinions on various social trends and campus fashion. After about two years’ endeavor, he got more than forty students participated and expand the influence of the club to to more than just one campus. His aim is to eventually establish a platform for students from across the nation to express their ideas. He’s also already invited his teachers to write articles for students as well.

Found time: September of 2014

Number of participants: 40 both from our campus and SZ high school of Science

Across Pacific Project:

The project initiated by Harry for the purpose of connecting high students form Shenzhen and San Francisco to both communicate and keep track of each other’s study life, so that they can experience a particular kind of cultural exchange and idea enrichment. The students are mainly connected by the means of internet (Skype, FaceTime, Google drive, etc.) and they can start their own activities with their partners from both sides to organize some meaningful events both collectively and individually.

We don’t have our club activities in a certain specific period of time, but we hold meetings once we finish the entire work of our last issue to conclude the process and assign tasks for next issue. However, we hold different kinds of activities other than those directly related to the magazine, for example, we can take part in the Across Pacific Project or have a party with our favorite foods talking about different kinds of topics on festivals like Christmas.
